You can make soap yourself quite easily from spent cooking oil and the RIGHT AMOUNT of caustic soda. The right quantity is one mole of oil to three of sodium hydroxide. Add the lye to rainwater, wait for it to dissolve, then stir it gradually into the oil for about half an hour, then leave it to stand for about a week. You will get fantastic quality soap that way, and it was basically how it was made then, though with wood ash. Don't put too much soda in though or it will burn your skin.
