allergies to the dander could defiantely be a source. als they have tiny claws ahich can scratch leaving you itchy. wash you hand immediately and use a antiseptic hand cream before adn after playing with them.

Sounds like you are allergic, at least topically to your hamsters. Please go see an allergist to confirm this, but in the interim you could take some benadryl to calm this reaction down.
